Mark Schieferstein paintings are oil on Gatorboard. (Gatorboard is an extruded polystyrene foam board bonded between two layers of Luxcell® wood-fiber veneer.) The surface is prepared with 3 layers of gesso. Once sanded to the desired texture he then begins to brush on thin layers of paint mixed with Liquin. These paintings often exceed 30 layers (each requiring 2 days between application) before completion.
